Ear Candling

History

Ear candling is an ancient technique in bodywork practiced by many early cultures, including the Egyptian, Chinese, East Indian and North American Indian. It has been regaining popularity with those who are interested in wholistic medicine and is considered by many an effective alternative therapy for a number of ailments.

It is also considered by some cultures a ceremonial practice in cleansing the mind and the senses.

In the past, materials and instruments other than bees wax candles have been used in this therapy. They ranged from ceramic cones with burning herbs to rolled up newspaper dipped in wax. For health reasons, disposable beeswax candles are used today.

Procedures

The primary purpose of this therapy is to remove unwanted materials such as heavy impacted ear wax, fungus infection residue and fat globules inside the ear canal. By placing the bottom end of a lit hollow beeswax candle snugly into the ear, a gentle vacuum is formed inside the candle. Coupled with the warmth inside the candle, this softens and dislodges wax and debris inside the ear and pulls them into the candle.

The amount of time for each sessions depends on the number of candles used. Depending on the conditions of the client, the first session may require three pairs of candles and two for subsequent sessions. Many people schedule three to four sessions a year as a regular program.

Benefits

Many people have found this therapy useful in removing and reducing ear wax build up, which may affect one's hearing and balancing. Excessive ear wax and other residues in the ears may also lead to fugal and bacterial infection, ear ache, ringing and dizziness.

This therapy may also help to eliminate or reduce congestion in the sinuses, which often is a cause of headache.

Ear candling is an effective and relatively noninvasive way to cleanse the ears. It is not limited to those who are suffering from ear problems. Many have find relaxation and energy balancing in this therapy.

Concurrent with other wholistic practice, ear candling is most effective to be applied as a preventive rather than curative therapy. If there is inflammation and acute pain in your ears, you should consult your physician to determine if immediate medical actions are required.
